Biography: Harry Read Allen was born in 1849 in Norwich, the son of glove cloth manufacturer George Allen. He studied the law in London before returning to Suffolk to set up a successful practice in Southwold. In addition, he held several additional posts including town clerk. Based on his experiences of provincial seaside life, he wrote a novel George Hern (1878) under the pseudonym "Henry Glemham." Sadly, he died suddenly from drowning while swimming on 2 July 1883 in Southwold. Note: author identified through the copy in the Wolff collection.
