Title: Sefton Hall
Author and Title: Mary Costello Caldbeck. Sefton Hall: A Tale
First Edition: London: T. C. Newby, 1870. 2 volumes, post 8vo., 21s.
Summary: A young man pursues the heiress of the eponymous estate. They are parted by misunderstanding. He leaves for Africa. They are reconciled. He returns to England just before she dies of illness. He then returns to Africa where he is killed by raiders. A review in the Athenæum (July 1870) likened reviewing formulaic books like this to the monotony of shelling peas. (LP)
