Biography: Annie Raine Ellis was born in 1829 in Durham, the daughter of clergyman and antiquarian James Raine and his wife Margaret Peacock. Her younger sister was the novelist Margaret Hunt. She married merchant and landowner Edmund Viner Ellis and the couple had several children. During her married life, she wrote three novels before dedicating her energies to editing the novels and early journals of Fanny Burney. The couple bought Sherborne House near Gloucester and Ellis died there on 11 September 1901.
