Biography: Ellen Augusta Gadesden was born in 1856 in Wandsworth, the sixth and youngest daughter of Augustus William Gadesden of Ewell Castle, Surrey. As a young woman, she wrote a novel Unto Which She Was not Born (1878). The same year, she married George William Thomson, who worked for the Oriental Bank in Yokohama, Japan and was the author of a collection of poems. The couple moved to Japan where they had a daughter born. Sadly, Gadesden died on 3 July 1879 in Yokohoma.
