Author: James Galbraith (1838–1890)

Biography: James Galbraith was born in 1838 in Glasgow, parentage unknown. Orphaned at age thirteen, he worked as a bookbinder before becoming a shoemaker. In the evenings, he attended classes to improve himself and evenually became a writer and lecturer. Galbraith is the author of City Poems and Songs (1868). According to its preface written by the Rev. Fergus Ferguson, the poet was encouraged in his poetry by the father of novelist Robert Buchanan. He went on to publish a novel, Kenneth Lee (1873). Galbraith evenually owned his own shoemaking business. He married and had six children. Galbraith died in 1890 in Glasgow. One of the few truly working-class novelists.
