Biography: May Hely-Hutchinson was born on 27 May 1861 on the Isle of Wight, the eldest daughter of Major-General William Clive Justice. Her father notably fought in the Indian Rebellion and served as commander in chief of the armed forces in the West Indies. In 1881, she married Hon. Sir Walter Francis Hely-Hutchinson, the second son of the 4th Earl of Donoughmore, in Barbados. The couple had five children. Her husband led an active life in the colonial service and beginning in 1901 was the governor of the Cape of Good Hope. Hely-Hutchinson wrote the single novel. She died on 15 November 1938 in Kensington.
