Biography: Ellen Ross was born in 1840 in Cheltenham, the daughter of schoolteacher George Rogers and his wife Mary (née Blissett). As a young woman she worked briefly as a dressmaker before becoming an author with Gertrude Winn (1863) under the pseudonym "Nelsie Brook." In 1868, she married Lancashire schoolmaster William Ross and the couple had several children including writer and colonial administrator William McGregor Ross (1876–1940). Even after her marriage, she continued to write novels. She died on 26 February 1917 in Barnet.
