Biography: Emma Raymond Pitman was born on 5 October 1841 in Milborne Port, Somerset, the only daughter of glove maker Joseph Raymond. At the age of seventeen, she wrote her first book and would go on to write twenty volumes as well as miscellaneous contributions to magazines. She was noted for her focus on missionary work. In 1866, she married fancy box maker Edwin Pitman and the couple had three children. Pitman was an ardent worker in her local Congregational church as a Sunday school teacher and social leader. She died of consumption on 28 May 1899 in Milborne Port.
