Biography: John Joseph Brown was born in 1845 in Manchester, the son of bank manager George Wrightman Brown of Whitehaven, Cumberland. Brown studied at the Middle Temple and was called to the bar in 1880. Under the pseudonym "C. E. Bourne," he wrote a collection of poems Fretwork (1879) and a novel The Fisherman of Rhava (1880). Late in life he married and moved to Margate. He died there on 18 April 1919.
