Author: Susan Elizabeth Gay (1845–1918)
Biography: Susan Elizabeth Gay was born in 1845 in Oswestry, the daughter of William Gay, the one-time Falmouth agent for the General Post Office Packet Service. She turned to literary work at an early age, writing two novels Harry's Big Boots (1873) for juveniles and Toxie (1875) for adults. A gifted artist, she illustrated the former book herself. Much of her future work was dedicated to theosophy and local Cornish history. Of the former, she wrote a biography of clairvoyant John William Fletcher. Of the latter, she wrote several works of history and folklore including Old Falmouth (1903). In politics she was an ardent supporter of women's suffrage. She never married and died on 17 January 1918 in Budock.
