Biography: Alfred Moberly was born on 9 September 1835 in Clapham, the son of William Moberly and his second wife Louisa Henrietta (née Martin). He attended Winchester College where his uncle George Moberly was headmaster before entering the army. During his career, he served with the 1st Regiment of Foot, worked as an instructor of musketry at Hythe, and lastly served with the 1st Royal Scots. Moberly retired from the army in 1879 with the honorary rank of major. In 1875, he married Frances Anne Mondel. After his retirement, Moberly wrote the single novel Lady Valeria (1886) as well as several dozen published short stories and became an accomplished painter. He died on 1 April 1912 in Wokingham.
