Biography: Mary Anne Mocatta was born in 1837 in Manchester, the daughter of merchant Henry Menzies and his wife Caroline. In 1857, she married clergyman William Abraham Mocatta, the vicar of Bishon and later incumbant of St. Helens. The couple had three children. Her husband died in 1876 and she moved to Headington where her sons were attending university. In her widowhood Mocatta began writing under her initials "M. A. M." beginning with Nancy Lambert (1877). Later advertisements revealed her identity. She never remarried and died on 20 May 1921 in Southampton.
