Biography: Thomas Carlisle was born on 11 June 1832 in Clifton, the son of Thomas Carlisle. As a young man, he entered the army and served for seventeen years, mainly in India with the 90th Light Infantry. While in India, he began contributing to Indian newspapers. When he retired from service, he joined the staff of the Globe in 1873 where he went on to produce the series of stories "The Unprofessional Vagabond." Carlisle had one foray into fiction with the novel Judith Gwynne under the pseudonym "Lisle Carr." Though well-reviewed, he never followed it up. In 1883, he became the editor of The People. He married Charlotte Fennell in 1868 and the couple had six children. He died on 13 September 1907 in Chiswick.
